The City of Records in Plant Production

Agriculture in Antalya

As one of the driving forces of Turkish agriculture, Antalya is not only notable for its production volumes but also stands at the heart of agricultural development thanks to its modern infrastructure, advanced technology use, and export strength. As the undisputed leader in greenhouse cultivation in Türkiye, Antalya plays a pivotal role in both the domestic market and global food supply with its wealth of expertise, producer capacity, and agricultural diversity.

A record-breaking city in plant production

In 2024, Antalya achieved a total of 8 million tonnes of plant production, with 4.9 million tonnes consisting of vegetables. The city accounts for 41% of Türkiye’s greenhouse cultivation. Particularly dominant in tomato, pepper, cucumber, and aubergine production, Antalya leads the nation with 2.6 million tonnes of tomatoes, 774 thousand tonnes of peppers, and 413 thousand tonnes of cucumbers, positioning it as a central hub for vegetable production.

Antalya also holds a prominent position in fruit cultivation. In 2024, the city produced 469 thousand tonnes of oranges, 406 thousand tonnes of bananas, 176 thousand tonnes of pomegranates, and 36 thousand tonnes of avocados. Furthermore, with 22 thousand tonnes of cultivated mushrooms, Antalya is also the national leader in mushroom production.

Agricultural power in exports

In 2024, Antalya’s total exports reached $2.2 billion, with $1.2 billion stemming from the agricultural sector. In fresh fruit and vegetable exports, peppers ($183 million) and tomatoes ($171 million) claimed the largest shares, while pomegranates, cucumbers, sweet and sour cherries also strengthened Antalya’s presence in international markets. The city made a notable contribution to ornamental plant exports as well, with a volume of $58 million.

A rising force in livestock and beekeeping

Alongside crop production, Antalya is also active in livestock, ranking second in Türkiye for goat farming. With 1.2 million small ruminants, 171 thousand cattle, and 242 thousand beehives, Antalya boasts a strong infrastructure in livestock production. As the central hub for bumblebee production, the city also stands out in the field of biological pest control.

Rigorous inspections, assured support

In 2024, a total of 66,000 food inspections were carried out in Antalya. Some 18,000 samples were taken, with every stage of food production meticulously monitored to ensure safe and healthy food for the public. Tens of thousands of additional inspections were conducted in the fields of plant health, fertilisers, agrochemicals, seeds, and aquaculture, ensuring a reliable and secure food chain. In that same year, agricultural producers received 485 million Turkish Liras in support payments, while rural development grants between 2006 and 2024 were 217 million Turkish Liras in total.

Agriculture grows through projects

Under the leadership of the Provincial Directorate, the EU-funded Climate-Friendly Women Farmers’ Guide project is developing a digital agricultural guide for female producers. Efforts are also underway to register the Yörük culture as part of the FAO’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). In Antalya, where 126,000 greenhouses have been digitised, the mapping of fruit orchards is currently in progress. R&D projects for the children of farmers and promotional initiatives for women’s cooperatives are also actively being implemented.

Leading in education and digital publishing

In 2024, 62,000 individuals received agricultural training. A total of 1,786 farmer meetings, 30 field demonstrations, and 50 training courses were held. The Antalya Tarım Online YouTube channel reached 3 million views, and thousands of people were provided with educational content via social media.
