Greenhouse Farming Discussed at the Istanbul Commodity Exchange

Ahmet Bülent Kasap, President of the Assembly of the Istanbul Commodity Exchange (İSTİB), stated that one-quarter of Türkiye’s total fruit and vegetable production occurs in greenhouses. He emphasized, "Thanks to investments and technological advancements, we rank fourth globally and second in Europe in greenhouse production."

According to a statement by İSTİB, the topic of greenhouse farming was discussed at the monthly "Sectors Speak at the Exchange Square" meeting.

The online event was moderated by President of the Reliable Product Platform Celal Toprak, and featured speakers including İSTİB Assembly President Ahmet Bülent Kasap, Coordinator of the Vegetable and Greenhouse Unit at the General Directorate of Plant Production of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Ezgi Çoban, Foreign Relations Expert at the Project Management Coordination of the Agriculture and Rural Development Support Institution (TKDK) Ali Ateş, President of the Greenhouse Investors and Producers Association (SERABİR) Onur Girdap, and President of the Greenhouse Construction, Equipment, and Exporters Association (SERKONDER) Ufuk Salih Uslu.

Speaking at the meeting, Ezgi Çoban stated that greenhouse farming is widely practiced in Türkiye and is continuously increasing. She noted, "Greenhouse farming is conducted in 80 out of 81 provinces. Soilless agriculture is present in 52 provinces, while 27 provinces have geothermal-based greenhouses. These greenhouses produce 8 million tons of vegetables and 1 million tons of fruit. With our support, greenhouse farming, which is on the path to branding in agricultural terms, is experiencing an increase in production."

İSTİB Assembly President Kasap also highlighted that Türkiye, thanks to its ecological characteristics, is among the leading countries in greenhouse vegetable and fruit production.

Reiterating that one-quarter of Türkiye’s total fruit and vegetable production takes place in greenhouses, Kasap stated, "Tomatoes account for 50% of this production. Other major greenhouse crops include cucumbers, watermelons, peppers, bananas, eggplants, and strawberries. Thanks to investments and technological advancements, we rank fourth globally and second in Europe in greenhouse production. This achievement demonstrates Türkiye’s strong position in agriculture and its potential for the future."

Türkiye Has 550,000 Decares of Greenhouse Area

SERABİR President Girdap emphasized that the expansion of geothermal-based greenhouses has led to an increase in export-oriented production.

SERKONDER President Uslu added, "Our country currently has 550,000 decares of greenhouse area. Over the past two years, there has been a 27% increase. To meet the demand based on population growth, we need an additional 10,000 decares of greenhouses annually. Additionally, depending on our export growth rate, we need to establish an extra 5,000 decares of greenhouse area."

Ali Ateş, Foreign Relations Expert at the Project Management Coordination of TKDK, stressed that all producers should benefit from the support fund provided by the state in collaboration with the European Union. He explained, "Fifty percent of the funds come from the EU, while the other 50% is financed by our national budget. Entrepreneurs looking to create employment opportunities, especially in rural areas, should take advantage of this fund."
