As the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing wars have once again underscored the global importance of food security, Türkiye has emerged as the leader in agricultural income across Europe and ranks 8th worldwide with an income valued at $68.9 billion, according to 2023 data.
According to information compiled by Anadolu Agency, the pandemic and conflicts have heightened the significance of food security around the world.
In this context, agriculture remains a crucial sector within the Turkish economy. The country produces 206 types of crops, being self-sufficient in the majority of them.
Türkiye stands out globally in nearly every field of agriculture. The country ranks 4th in the world for fruit and vegetable production and 11th for overall plant-based production.
The agriculture sector contributes approximately 7% to Türkiye’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs around 20% of the labour force.
In raw milk production, Türkiye ranks 9th globally and 3rd in Europe. The country is also 7th in the world and 1st in Europe in beef production, while ranking 9th globally and 2nd in Europe in chicken meat production.
Türkiye also holds 10th place globally and 2nd in Europe for egg production and stands out as 2nd in the world and 1st in Europe in honey production. In aquaculture, Türkiye is ranked 16th globally and 2nd in Europe.
Türkiye’s agricultural income has grown significantly from $25 billion in 2002 to $74 billion in 2024. Similarly, agricultural exports increased from $3.8 billion to $32.6 billion over the same period.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Bank have calculated agricultural income data up to 2023.
In 2013, China topped the global rankings with an agricultural income of $855.9 billion, followed by India with $318.4 billion and the U.S. with $222.5 billion. Türkiye ranked 8th that year with $63.9 billion.
In 2018, China again led with $978.6 billion, followed by India with $433.3 billion and the U.S. with $185.6 billion. Türkiye ranked 10th with $45.1 billion.
In 2023, Türkiye rose to 8th place globally with an agricultural income of $68.9 billion. China remained in first place with $1.267 trillion, followed by India with $570.7 billion, and the U.S. with $222.2 billion. The 2023 ranking is based on estimated U.S. data.
In recent years, Türkiye has consistently ranked among the top European countries in agricultural output. In 2013, Russia led with $68.6 billion, followed by Türkiye with $63.9 billion, and Italy with $44.3 billion.
In 2018, Russia again led with $56.2 billion, followed by Türkiye with $45.1 billion and France with $42.5 billion.
In 2023, Türkiye climbed to the top spot in Europe with an output of $68.9 billion, ahead of Russia with $67.7 billion and France with $53.1 billion.
